Abigail Kafka earned their BA at Columbia University in English and Art History with a concentration in creative writing. Most recently their work has appeared on NPR in “(Mis)diagnosis: Bipolar.” In this piece they examine why they were diagnosed with bipolar disorder when they were 19 and discover that the diagnosis was wrong. They use their personal story to explore the contested approaches to bipolar diagnosis and consequent treatment in the U.S. They are also the writer and co-producer of the fiction podcast “Talking on the Job,” which has over 1.4 million downloads as of September 2025. Currently they work as a freelance writer, editor and proofreader in Berlin, Germany, where they are part of Lettrétage, an anchor-institution of the free literature scene in Berlin.
Abigail was born in San Diego and has lived in New York City, Paris, and Prague. When not sitting at their desk made from two sawhorses and a door, they can be found in the kitchen experimenting with pickles, on their bike trying to avoid cobblestone streets, and wandering through the verdant German woods like a character in a Grimms’ Fairy Tale (minus, ideally, the murder and mutilation).
